Our Instructors

Sensei Mark Roberts, Yodan, is School Head of Honshin Kan Martial Arts in Santa Rosa, CA.  He began his study of Budo in 1979 and spent a year at Waseda University in Tokyo,  Japan, studying the Japanese language and culture and practicing Judo at the Kodokan, where he was given the rank of Ikkyu in 1982.  Returning to the States, he took up Shorinji Kempo in Redondo Beach, CA, before moving to northern California.  He began studying Danzan Ryu Jujutsu at Honshin Kan under Sensei Jeff Penner in 1994, and is also a graduate of the Danzan Ryu Seifukujutsu Institute Modules I-III,  He was awarded the rank of Shodan in Aikido in 2013 and is currently studying Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, one of the oldest extant Japanese martial arts, to learn sword and other classical Japanese weapons.

Sensei Ken Gadbury has been studying Danzan Ryu Jujitsu since 1991 and earned his black belt in 1996. He is a graduate of the Danzan Ryu Seifukujitsu Institute Modules I and II and holds the rank of Yodan.

Sensei Werner Armbrust has been studying Danzan Ryu Jujitsu since 2005 and earned his black belt in 2008.  He is a graduate of the Danzan Ryu Seifukujitsu Institute Modules I and II.  He holds the rank of Sandan.

Sensei Bob Lindberg has been studying Danzan Ryu Jujitsu since 1996 and earned his black belt in 2000.  He is a graduate of the Danzan Ryu Seifukujitsu Institute Modules I, II and III. Bob is a CMT, Certified Massage Therapist by the State of California.  He holds the rank of Sandan.

Sensei Jeff Penner has been studying Danzan Ryu Jujitsu since 1985 and earned his black belt in 1991 under Professor Robert Hudson. He has been teaching at Honshin Kan since 1993, and currently teaches our black belt class, every second Saturday from 9AM to noon.  He is a graduate of the Danzan Ryu Seifukujitsu Institute Modules I and II and holds the rank of Godan.
